- he carries a lot of pain from the past, and tried to avoid it for too long, but now, the past has got to him, and all his “peace” was disturbed
- he tried to follow his Peritian therapist advices, but ended up thinking too little of her
- he's confronted by someone from his past, and he struggles maintaining his invulnerability.

Family tragedy: his wife and daughter were killed by burglars, as they were coming out of a violin concert in 1988 (Xiao was 9).
- Daoji was meant to be at his wife's violin concert, but missed the event while staying late at the lab that night. He carries the guilt of not being there that night; Yu Yan and Xiao were waiting for him outside the theater
- the necklace Yu Yan was wearing that night (what she was killed for) was a gift from Daoji for their 10th anniversary
- he quit his job, lost everything and move to Queens to start over
- he began teaching the art of Kung-Fu to young kids in an old gymnasium every night
- at the same time, he was investigating his family murder, since he thought the police department was full of useless employees
- in late 2005, during a stormy night, Daoji found himself making justice by his own hands, seriously injuring a young man and his brother (responsible for the death of Yu Yan and Xiao); when he came back to his senses, ran away from the scene and chose to get out of town
- as years went by, Daoji lost hope for humankind, until he stumbled upon Peritia, which is his whole life now
