- his parents married when Sying was 21 years old and Wei was 37 years old; she came from a poor family who worked for Liu's family for 3 generations, and got involved romantically with Wei secretly while working as his secretary since she was 18; Wei's father would not give his blessing for this relationship, however, he passed away two years later and Wei's mother accepted the union and even attended the ceremony
- his parents got married in the Chinese spring of 1973, months before their first child Lěi was born; the Liu family supported his excellent education, and fought bravely against the high society status quo, that would discriminate Lěi for having a "simple" heritage from his mother side
