== Usage ==
This template is used in [[WP:Manual of Style/Glossaries|template-structured glossaries]] with the {{tl|defn}} template to provide an explanatory [[WP:Hatnote|hatnote]] for a {{tl|term}}. It can also be used in manually coded HTML [[description list]]s.

*It must be used at the top of, i.e. {{strong|inside}}, a {{tnull|defn}} (or manual {{tag|dd}} markup) that pertains to the {{tnull|term}}, usually at the top of the first one unless it only pertains to a specific definition.
*It {{strong|cannot}} be used between the {{tnull|term}} and {{tnull|defn}} (i.e., between {{tag|dt|c}} and {{tag|dd|o}}), or inside {{tnull|term|content{{=}}...}} ({{tag|dt}}), or it will break the glossary (description list) markup.

Inline (e.g. {{tlx|Crossreference}}) or after-content (e.g. {{tlx|More}}) note templates can be used inside definitions normally. The purpose of {{em|this}} template is prevent the excessive indentation of hatnotes at the top of the definition.

{{strong|This template is not for crossreferences to other pages, or other forms of [[WP:SELFREF|Wikipedia self-reference]].}} For those, use {{tl|crossreference}}. (This template does not use the CSS class <code>selfref</code>.)

When used with a multi-definition term, the definition in which the {{tnull|ghat}} appears must be manually numbered (usually <code>1&nbsp; ...</code>, as shown in the example below).
